Introduction to Physics & 9 Branches of Physics

The topic “Introduction to Physics” covers the following topics are included under this section:-

  • What is Science
  • 2 Main Stream of Sciences
  • Main 5 Distinct Disciplines of Physical Sciences
  • Physics and its role in Science, Technology and Society
  • 9 Branches of Physics

What is Science?

The word “Science” is derived from the Latin word “Scientia” which means knowledge. Science is the knowledge gained from observations and experiments.

The word “___” is derived from the ____ word “____” which means ______.

Remember this with blanks, it will help to easily learn “what is physics”

Other Definitions of Science

  • Science is the study of the world around us.
  • Science is the process of learning about the natural world through observation and experimentation.
  • Science is all about improving our knowledge of the universe.
  • Science is how we try to improve our knowledge and understanding of the universe.

What are the two main streams of Science or Natural Philosophy?

In the 18th century, science was divided into the following two main streams:-

  1. Physical Sciences. This steam of science deals with the study of non-living things
  2. Biological (Life) Sciences. This steam of science deals with the study of living things

Other Definitions of Physical Science

  • Physical science is the systematic study of the inorganic world.
  • Physical Science deals with the structure of matter and the interactions between the fundamental constituents of the observable universe

Other Definitions of Biological Science

  • Biological Science is the systematic study of the organinic world.
  • Biological Sciences is the study of life and living organisms

This stream of science deals with the study of _____ things.

Easy to remember, just fill the blank with non-living or living for both definitions.

What are the main five distinct disciplines of Physical Sciences?

In the 19th century, physical sciences were divided into the following five distinct disciplines:-

  1. Physics
  2. Chemistry
  3. Astronomy
  4. Geology
  5. Meteorology

Introduction to Physics

The word “Physics” is derived from the Greek word “Physica” which means nature or knowledge of nature. Physics is a physical science which deals with the study of matter, energy, and their interaction. The law and principles of Physics help us to understand nature.

Other Definitions

  • Physics is the science of matter, motion, and energy.
  • Physics is the science of energy and matter and how they relate to each other.
  • Physics is the scientific study of matter, energy, space, and time, and of the relations between them.

What is the crucial role of Physics in Science, Technology and Society?

  1. Role is Science. The laws and principles of physics help us to understand nature. The rapid growth in science during the recent years has become possible due to the discoveries and inventions in the field of physics. Consider pulleys that make it easy to lift heavy loads. Electricity is used not only to get light and heat but also mechanical energy that drives fans and electric motors etc.
  2. Role in Technology. The technologies are the applications of scientific principles. Most of the technologies of our modern society through the world are related to physics. For example, a car is made on the principle of mechanics and refrigerator is based on the principles of thermodynamics.
  3. Role in Society. In our society, it is hardly to find a device where physics is not involved. For example, mobile phones allow us to contact people anywhere in the world and to get latest worldwide information. We can take and save pictures, send and receive messages of our friends. Similarly, TV, radio, refrigerators, air-conditioners and washing machines etc are the results of the applications of physics.

Are scientific inventions causing harms and destrucion to nature?

Yes, scientific inventions have also caused harm and destruction to nature. One of which is environmental pollution and the other is deadly weapons.

How many branches of physics are there? Define each one.

There are 9 branches of physics included in the coursebook as under:-

HENG LAMPS

Hint to remember the names of physics branches
  1. Heat (Thermodynamics). It is the branch of physics which deals with the nature of heat, modes of transfer and effects of heat.
  2. Electricity & Magnetism (Electromagnetism). It is the study of the charges at rest and in motion, their effects and their relationship with magnetism.
  3. Nuclear Physics. It deals with the properties and behavior of nuclei and the particles within the nuclei.
  4. Geo Physics. It is the study of internal structure of the earth.
  5. Light (Optics). This branch of physics deals with the physical aspects of light, its properties, working and use of optical instruments.
  6. Atomic Physics. It is the study of the structure and properties of atoms.
  7. Mechanics. It is the branch of physics which deals with the study of motion of objects, its causes and effects.
  8. Plasma Physics. It is the study of procution and properties of the ionic state (4th state) of matter.
  9. Sound. It is the branch of physics which deals with the study of physical aspects of sound waves, their production, properties and applications.
