What is SHM and Wave?

It is a to and fro oscillatory motion in which accelerates the body directly proportional to body displacement from its mean position. It always directed towards the mean position.

In simple words, Oscillation means repetitive changes from the point of equilibrium. It is also known as Vibration.

How Simple Harmonic Motion occur?

It occurs when the Net Force is directly proportional to the body displacement from the mean position.

Define Restoring Force.

It is a force which always pushes or pulls the object towards the means position when object performs oscillatory motion.

Write down the important features of SHM (Simple Harmonic Motion).

  1. Body Always Vibrates. A body executing SHM always vibrates about a fixed position
  2. Acceleration towards Mean Position. Its acceleration is always directed towards the mean position
  3. Directly Proportional Magnitude to Displacement. The magnitude of acceleration is always directly proportional to its displacement from the mean position. The magnitude of acceleration will be zero at the mean position while it will be maximum at the extreme position.
  4. Velocity. Its velocity (rate of change / speed) is maximum at the mean position and zero at the extreme position

What is Amplitude (A)?

It is the maximum displacement of a vibrating body on either side from its mean position.

What is Vibration / Cycle?

A vibration or cycle is a one complete round trip of a vibrating body about its mean position.

What you know about Time Period (T)?

It is a time taken by a vibrating body to complete ONE VIBRATION / ONE CYCLE.

How would you define Frequency (f)?

It is the number of vibrations or cycles of a vibrating body in once second and it is reciprocal of time period. f=1/T

What is Damped Oscillations?

These are the oscillations of a system in the presence of some resistive force as resistive force progressively reduces the amplitude of the vibration of motion.

Mechanical Waves

Longitudinal (Compressional) Waves

Transverse Waves

These are mechanical waves in which particles of the medium vibrate about their mean position perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the waves.

When a wave traveling from one medium enters into another medium, its travel direction may change in second medium. It is called refraction of waves.

What is Diffraction of Waves?

The bending or spreading of waves around the sharp edges, corners of obstacles or slits is called diffraction of waves.
